1.
Read Mark 4:37-41. There is no doubt that being in small boat in a big storm is a scary place, and their natural fear wasn’t wrong. It was what the disciples chose to do with the fear that made all the difference. Jesus saw that they had no faith in Him, because in verse 38, the disciples accused Jesus of not
2.
When the disciples woke Jesus up, what or whom did He rebuke first?
the storm
the disciples
3.
a) The total calm of the sea should have filled the disciples with peace but, according to Mark 4:41, they were just as fearful after He calmed the storm as they had been when they were in the midst of it. Why?
b) There are many believers today who always think their boat is “going down.” It stops them from moving forward in life, from following their dreams. What is your favorite “go-to” Bible verse that you might use to calm their fears? (Thought question – answers will vary.)
4.
In Mark 4:35, Jesus started the trip by saying, “Let’s go to the other side.” If Jesus tells you that you’re going to the other side, you might as well get ready. You’re going. If a storm comes up on the way, ... (Mark 11:22)
5.
Can you imagine the Savior of the World drowning? Can you imagine redemption being put on hold because the key player was no longer available? No, absolutely not! Knowing that Jesus is in the boat with you, and you will not drown, is all you need to know when the waves are sweeping over the side of the boat. Then you can stop focusing on the situation and start applying Biblical principles, such as these.
a) Philippians 4:4:
b) James 1:2:
c) Colossians 3:15:
d) 1 Peter 4:7:
e) 1 Peter 5:7:
6.
a) In John 16:33, Jesus tells us that, while we’re on earth, we will certainly ...
b) However, He also says we should be of good cheer because ...
7.
Jesus must have been devastated when the disciples asked Him if He even cared that they were going to drown. They didn’t wake Him up to update Him on the situation. They didn’t wake Him up so He could put His life jacket on. They woke Him up to accuse Him of indifference, blatant disregard for their lives. And this is the Man Who came to earth to give up His life on the cross for our sins.
If you meet someone who thinks Jesus doesn’t care about our every day problems, what scriptures could you use to reassure this person? (Thought question).
a)
b)
c)
8.
How can we use Hebrews 13:5, Joshua 1:5, or Deuteronomy 31:6 and 8, if we meet someone who thinks they are facing their problems alone.
9.
If we give in to our fears, our boat will surely sink. It’s impossible to focus on Jesus when we’re busy monitoring our own tidal wave of problems. In Matthew 6:33, where did Jesus tell us was the best place to keep our focus?
10.
When Gideon questioned God about his suitability for leading Israel against the Midianites, God said _____ (Judges 6:16).
Be sure, a believer is never alone. The Lord is always in the boat with him.
