By Prof. Marlize Lamrprecht, Ph.D.

Trauma is a reality of life in a fallen world. People of every age, culture, and background experience painful events that can leave deep emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual wounds. Some crises develop slowly through ongoing stress and hardship, while others come suddenly through loss, violence, disaster, abuse, illness, or tragedy. When individuals become overwhelmed and unable to cope effectively, they often struggle with fear, confusion, anxiety, hopelessness, or emotional imbalance.

The study of traumatology seeks to understand the nature of trauma, the effects it has upon human lives, and the pathways toward healing and restoration. In this course, we will examine the causes and characteristics of crisis and trauma, explore the stages of response people often experience, and study practical and biblical principles for helping those who are hurting. As believers, we are called not only to understand suffering, but also to become instruments of compassion, encouragement, wisdom, and hope to those walking through life’s darkest moments.
